Miami, Florida – This week, the Florida Legislature passed SB 1718, the most toxic anti-immigrant bill of the Governor Ron DeSantis era which is now awaiting the Governor’s signature. Ana Sofia Pelaez, co-founder and executive director of Miami Freedom Project issued the following statement:
“In passing this legislation, the Florida Legislature is seeking to scapegoat and criminalize the simple existence of members of our community who are undocumented and seeking to regulate their immigration status by threatening their existing support systems and direct service providers. This is not about stopping irregular immigration, it’s about terrorizing families and communities that are already here.
This bill will make it a felony to provide transportation – even to a friend or family member – with an unregulated status into the state of Florida, force hospitals to collect data on the immigration status of patients seeking treatment, and require law enforcement to collect DNA samples from those without regulated immigration status among other draconian and dystopian measures.
Altogether, this bill will create fear inside and outside immigrant communities and confirm what we already knew: that Florida’s elected officials believe ethnic and racial profiling is an acceptable tool of government policy. That this bill was passed with the complicity of legislators who proudly tout their own immigrant backgrounds to campaign, then turn their backs on those seeking the same refuge our families sought and received, is especially egregious and an act of base, political cowardice.
Our city has always taken pride in being, in its majority, foreign born and a testament to what immigrants can accomplish when they receive the benefits of a humane immigration system that recognizes the incalculable worth of those seeking a better way. It is in this spirit that Miami Freedom Project will continue to stand alongside those who come here seeking refuge – because we know them, because we owe them, because we are them.”

Miami, Florida – Esta semana, la Legislatura de Florida aprobó el SB 1718, el proyecto de ley antiinmigrantes más tóxico de la era del gobernador Ron DeSantis, que ahora espera la firma del gobernador. Ana Sofia Peláez, cofundadora y directora ejecutiva de Miami Freedom Project emitió el siguiente comunicado:
“Al aprobar esta legislación, la Legislatura de Florida busca convertir en chivos expiatorios y criminalizar la simple existencia de miembros de nuestra comunidad que son indocumentados y buscan regular su estatus migratorio, amenazando sus sistemas de apoyo existentes y proveedores de servicios directos. No se trata de detener a los inmigrantes irregulares; se trata de aterrorizar a familias y comunidades que ya están aquí.
Este proyecto de ley hará que proporcionar transporte al estado de Florida, incluso a un amigo o familiar, sea un delito grave, obligará a los hospitales a recopilar datos sobre el estado migratorio de los pacientes que buscan tratamiento y requerirá que las fuerzas del orden público recolecten muestras de ADN de aquellos sin un estado migratorio regulado, entre otras medidas draconianas y distópicas.
En conjunto, este proyecto de ley creará temor dentro y fuera de las comunidades de inmigrantes y confirmará lo que ya sabíamos: que los funcionarios electos de Florida creen que la discriminación racial y étnica es una herramienta aceptable de la política gubernamental. Que este proyecto de ley se aprobara con la complicidad de legisladores que orgullosamente alardean de sus propios orígenes inmigrantes para hacer campaña y luego dan la espalda a quienes buscan el mismo refugio que nuestras familias buscaron y recibieron, es especialmente atroz y un acto de cobardía política vil.
