IMMIGRATION GROUPS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE IN RESPONSE TO DESANTIS SIGNING OF ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILL
TALLAHASSEE – TODAY, Thursday, May 11th at the Freedom Tower in Miami, representatives from national and state immigration groups will hold a press conference to speak out against a new anti-immigrant bill that Governor Ron DeSantis just signed into law. The legislation makes life harder for Florida’s roughly 775,000 undocumented immigrants—as well as the many Florida authorized residents who employ, rely on and assist them.
The law, a somewhat softened version of a much harsher package of restrictions sought by anti-immigrant Governor Ron DeSantis, still includes extreme restrictions that will create extra work and confusion for myriad state employers, medical centers, faith groups, and nonprofits—such as (1) mandating e-verify for all employers with over 25 employees; (2) Making it a felony to transport undocumented people into the state of Florida; (3) requiring hospitals to collect immigration status data from patients; and (4) barring undocumented students from becoming attorneys in Florida, among others.
Speakers at the press conference will urge Floridians who support immigrants regardless of their legal status to call their Members of Congress in D.C. and urge them to support a pathway to citizenship for the country’s roughly 11 million undocumented residents who pay taxes and contribute to our economy but live in a state of limbo and fear.

BACKGROUND
Florida needs immigrants.
With only 71 workers for every 100 open jobs, Florida is suffering grave labor shortages in key industries like nursing, home health care, construction, agriculture and restaurants and hospitality.

Immigrants make up more than a quarter of Florida’s labor force, with heavy representation in health care and social assistance, retail, construction, hospitality and food services. Immigrants also make up nearly half of the state’s agricultural labor force. They contribute billions of dollars to the state’s tax coffers and overall economy. Florida needs immigrant labor more than ever.

GRUPOS PRO INMIGRANTES REALIZARÁN CONFERENCIA DE PRENSA EN RESPUESTA A LA FIRMA DE DESANTIS DE LEY ANTI-INMIGRANTES
TALLAHASSEE – HOY, jueves 11 de mayo, representantes nacionales y estatales de grupos pro-inmigrantes realizarán una conferencia de prensa para pronunciarse en contra de la nueva ley antiinmigrante que el gobernador Ron DeSantis acaba de promulgar. La legislación, que hace más difícil la vida de aproximadamente 775.000 inmigrantes indocumentados de Florida, así como para los muchos residentes del estado, que los emplean y dependen de ellos, fue firmada el día de hoy por el Gobernador.
La ley, que es un paquete de medidas severas impulsado por el gobernador antiinmigrante Ron DeSantis, incluye restricciones extremas que crearán serios problemas para muchos empleadores estatales, centros médicos, grupos religiosos y organizaciones sin fines de lucro, como por ejemplo: (1) Implementar el e-Verify para todos los empleadores con más de 25 empleados; (2) Convertir en delito grave el transporte de personas indocumentadas al estado de Florida; (3) exigir a los hospitales que recopilen datos sobre el estado migratorio de los pacientes; y (4) prohibir que los estudiantes indocumentados se conviertan en abogados en Florida, entre otros.
