Miami, Florida – In view of the various Supreme Court decisions issued this week, Miami Freedom Project co-founder Ana Sofia Pelaez has made the following statement:
“In three landmark decisions this week by the majority of the United States Supreme Court, justices shredded decades of practice and precedent to push a reactionary social agenda, making it clear that this Court is more interested in playing partisan politics than upholding our Constitution.
In declaring that any race-based considerations used in the college admissions process violates the law— and hence ending affirmative action as we know it — the Court applies a standard inconsistent with even recent rulings, delivering an intellectually dishonest finding that will have profound negative effects on the lives of many promising minority students.
The Court also struck down a democratically-approved plan to provide debt relief to millions of Americans, further making life difficult for students (and recent graduates) from disadvantaged backgrounds.
And turning back years of progress, the Court sided with a Colorado business in creating what is essentially the right for private business to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people.
We agree with Justice Elena Kagan in her dissent, that the nature of the rulings the Court is issuing are “a danger to a democratic order.”
And it is with growing alarm that we watch the hard won social progress of the past decades and long-established rights rolled back by an activist court. It is difficult to express the frustration many of us working towards equity feel at seeing people with “Justice” as a title disregard their responsibility to ensure and uphold a more just society. These decisions are cruel, regressive, and diminish the promise of democracy.

Miami, Florida: En vista de las diversas decisiones emitidas por la Corte Suprema esta semana, Ana Sofía Peláez, co-fundadora de Miami Freedom Project, ha hecho la siguiente declaración:
“En tres decisiones históricas esta semana emitidas por la mayoría de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos, los jueces desmantelaron décadas de práctica y precedentes para promover una agenda social reaccionaria, dejando claro que esta Corte está más interesada en hacer política partidista que en defender nuestra Constitución.
Al declarar que cualquier consideración basada en la raza utilizada en el proceso de admisión universitaria viola la ley y poner fin a la acción afirmativa tal como la conocemos, la Corte aplica un estándar inconsistente incluso con fallos recientes, llegando a una conclusión intelectualmente deshonesta que tendrá efectos negativos profundos en la vida de muchos estudiantes minoritarios prometedores.
La Corte también invalidó un plan aprobado democráticamente para proporcionar alivio de deuda a millones de estadounidenses, lo que dificulta aún más la vida de los estudiantes (y recién graduados) de entornos desfavorecidos.
Además, al dar marcha atrás a años de progreso, la Corte se puso del lado de un negocio en Colorado al crear esencialmente el derecho de las empresas privadas a discriminar a las personas LGBTQ+.
Estamos de acuerdo con la jueza Elena Kagan en su disidencia, en la que señala que la naturaleza de las decisiones que está tomando la Corte representa “un peligro para el orden democrático”.
Con creciente alarma, observamos cómo el arduo progreso social de las últimas décadas y los derechos establecidos desde hace mucho tiempo están siendo revertidos por una Corte activista. Es difícil expresar la frustración que muchos de nosotros, que trabajamos por la equidad, sentimos al ver cómo personas con el título de “Justicia” ignoran su responsabilidad de garantizar y defender una sociedad más justa. Estas decisiones son crueles, regresivas y disminuyen la promesa de la democracia.”
